Symphonic Dances

A suite of five movements first performed by the York Guildhall Orchestra in February 2014. They write: It has become a favourite with the orchestra … it features beautiful, memorable folk-like melodies, clever use of countermelodies, some lovely harmonies and colourful orchestration which really make the piece come alive for players and audience alike.

This work is derived from my original ‚Dance Trio‘ for violin, clarinet and piano. My aim was to compose an easily accessible, melodious score framed within the clear rhythmic structures of dance forms. The March utilises all the characteristics of the genre; the main melody in the Sarabande was drawn from an early work for violin and orchestra; the Last Waltz developed from a tune written for my daughter; the Intermezzo although not a strict dance form, is in a strongly marked triple time; the final Reel reflects my love of Scotland and its traditional dances, the slower second subject perhaps captures the majesty of the scenery.
