Carlos Chavez was born in Mexico City on June 13, 1899. Active as a composer, pianist, conductor, educator, writerandarts administrator, he was the undisputable leader of Mexico’s musical life for over 50 years. Chavez raised Mexico’s musical standards and exerted a tremendous influence on every facet of the country’s artistic life. Hedied in 1978 at the age of 79.

The Piano Sonata No. 2 was the first piece written by Chavez to be printed and distributed under the auspices of a major European publisher. The first edition ofthiswork was out of print for many years. Fortunatley, thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Ana Chavez, the composer’s daughter, the work is once more being made available to the public. Pianists and music lovers will find enormouspleasurediscovering this work by one of the truly important figures of 20th century music.
